Did you know? The toys that kids play with can shape their development for better or worse. Some will help your children learn, think, and grow. Whereas other toys will stunt, delay, or hinder them. Let’s talk about toys that help kids develop and inspire creativity.

There are different types of toys. An active toy does something that entertains. All a child needs to do is press a button and sit back and watch. Wind-up toys, mobiles, and Leap Frogs are some examples. Whereas a passive toy doesn’t do anything. A child needs to take initiative and be active to enjoy it. Such as blocks, stuffed animals, and books.

The ultimate active toy is a touchscreen device. Phones and tablets create the most still and quiet children. Sometimes at restaurants, I am surprised to see there is a baby a few tables away. Completely pacified by their screens, I didn’t even know they were there. Screentime can have many positives. Providing home schooling and educational resources. Teaching kids things their parents might not know, such as new languages. But there are downsides to the touchscreens. The more active the toy, the more passive the child. Today, my toddler peed all over the couch (for the first time in months). She was too busy watching herself in dance class to notice she had to go. The harm of excessive screentime is reflected in how kids react when it’s removed. Their responses make the damage clear. The quiet child suddenly turns into a loud, upset mess.

It is all about balance and awareness. Passive toys challenge your child’s ability. Stretching their capacity and imagination. Yes, there are plenty of awesome educational channels on YouTube. However, puzzles and Legos should be part of toybox too. It’s a joy to watch your child solve problems or come up with fun ways to play. It will take them some patience and practice – but worth it.

Great toys for babies and toddlers include:

Balls or Scarves
Plastic bottles
Containers (like cups, bowls, and baskets)
Cardboard tubes or boxes
Sticks or string

Look at Facebook Marketplace or local mom groups for great deals. This also helps with sustainability. Note: These toys come in monthly subscription boxes. They are often used only during that time. Therefore, many of the toys are “like new” on the secondhand market. You can also search for competitors that make similar toys.

Another option: I often buy used books and wooden toys at Once Upon a Child in Ocoee. You can find them at 8937 W Colonial Dr, Ocoee, FL 34761. It is a consignment shop. They have items for babies to teens, like board games, books, blocks, and more. You have to dig to find what you want, it is like a treasure hunt for parents.

P.S. Keep the quantity low; reduce the number of choices your child has to make. A common Montessori method is to keep a limited number of toys lying around. After a few weeks or a month, rotate the toys and freshen up the choices. Children love the change (even if the toys are older) and will be active!
